Installing PHP in Your Computer

For running PHP, you need a web server because PHP can’t directly deal with web requests. After installing, PHP acts as a sub-module of the web server which handles requests for PHP files.

PHP is free and supported by almost all recognized operating systems and web servers. Refer official documentation on how to configure PHP based on the operating system and the web server.

If you are new to web development, you may not have any experience on installing a web server. And most web applications rarely live without a database system. So you will also need to install a database system like MySQL. You need these installed in your computer to simulate a web server which is required for your PHP development.

If you are less experienced in this subject and going to install each of these manually, it can be a tedious task which would then decreases your enthusiasm on learning PHP. Therefore it’s recommended that you get these software products installed easily as possible.

Once you get your hands dirty with PHP, you can consider learning more on manual installations which would definitely be a plus when you are going to manage your own web server.

For many PHP applications, Apache has been the desired web server and MySQL has been the desired database system. Being free and providing advanced features are the main reasons for this popularity. AMP (Apache, MySQL, PHP) is a common abbreviation used for these three products.

Role of PHP in Web Applications

PHP is a server side scripting language. That means its processing happens in the server by consuming server’s resources and sends only the output to the client. In a client side scripting language like JavaScript, processing happens in the client’s computer consuming its resources.

To understand the role of PHP, let’s look at how a normal web request and a web request that involves PHP happen. Please note that there can be many intermediate steps involved but only the main and important ones have been mentioned for understanding purposes.

Bumpbox: A Lightbox Clone that Supports images, html files, flv videos, swf files and PDF’s

Bumpbox is another lightbox clone with a few advantages over other lightboxes – it supports not only all common media types but also PDF’s.

Yet, the integration and implementation on your own site is pretty simple. Just add the scripts to your head section, add classes to your links that should use bumpbox, define a rel tag with the size that the bumpbox should have and you’re ready to roll.

Bumpbox automatically detects what kind of filetype you wish to show in the box, so you do not need to specify the type, easing the process of integration.

BASIC STEPS

Copy the images to your root folder or adapt the image paths in the bumpbox.js according to your folder settings

Place the included mootools12.js, the bumpbox.js and – in case you want to use flv files, the flowplayer.min.js as well as the flowplayer.swf and flowplayer.controls.swf into your document root.

If your paths differ, adapt the paths inside the bumpbox.js to your directory structure.

Netlog integrates with Google Friend Connect

5/21/2009 01:00:00 PM

When we started building Friend Connect, we wanted to provide a fully open system — one that lets you join any website and interact with the people there in a meaningful way, regardless of where they come from. To enable this kind of engagement, we used open standards like OpenID, OAuth, and OpenSocial as underlying technologies, enabling any other service to plug into Friend Connect.

Today, we’re excited to share that Netlog has used these open standards to integrate their social networking service with Google Friend Connect. Now, Netlog’s more than 45 million users across Europe can:

  • Sign into any of the millions of sites and blogs using Friend Connect with their Netlog credentials
  • Use their Netlog profiles on these sites
  • See if any of their friends are already members of the same sites and invite other Netlog friends to join
  • Share their Friend Connect activities with their friends on Netlog, and
  • Send messages back to their Netlog friends

Additionally, for sites that are already using Friend Connect, one of the benefits of this standards based model is that they can take advantage of any new service that chooses to join this open ecosystem, like Netlog, without any additional work. The new network option simply appears.

Any social network or service, whether they are large or small, regional or global, niche or general audience, is welcome to take advantage of these open standards to integrate with Friend Connect, and participate in an open social web.
